Join in an opportunity to learn about important issues of Justice in Western Sahara which has been called “Africa’s Last Colony”.
This is disputed land, currently the site of armed conflict and a crisis of displaced people. The current US Administration has flouted international consensus siding with the colonizing Moroccan government against the Saharawi. Major Canadian agricultural companies have also done business here despite grievous human rights violations.
We are joined by Joshua Campbell, the creator of “Sirocco: Winds of Resistance” who will share his film and then facilitate conversation with others who will speak to the current situation in relation to international law, the on-the-ground situation and more.
Other speakers include:
Senia Bachir. Senia is a refugee and activist from Western Sahara. For nearly two decades, she has been advocating for the freedom and the right to self-determination of her people, as well as exposing the brutal and oppressive occupation of Morocco. Since 2015, she has been working in the office of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
Dr. Jeffrey Smith. Jeffrey teaches law and public policy at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs in Ottawa. Formerly counsel to the UN mission in East Timor during that country’s transition to independence, he researches and writes about all aspects of Western Sahara in international law, including the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and their protection while under occupation, along with the roles of the United Nations and states in what is called Africa’s last colony. His most recently published work explores application of the crime of aggression to Western Sahara.
